Go back to the glorious era of the Thai film industry with “Once Upon A Star”, the latest movie by award-winning director Nonzee "Oui" Nimibutr, which premieres on Netflix on Oct 11.
Nonzee has delivered numerous acclaimed works, including Dang Bireley’s And Young Gangsters, Nang Nak and Jan Dara. He also takes on the role of executive producer for Once Upon A Star. Nonzee opens up about his deep connection to the Thai film industry through a heartfelt letter expressing his profound love for Thai cinema: “Over the decades, the Thai film industry has gone through a lot and weathered many ups and downs. From silent films and noir classics to dubbed 16mm films in cinemas, it evolved into open air theaters, traveling pharma-cinema units, and has now arrived at today’s streaming platforms. I believe that the draw of Thai movies has never faded from the hearts of the Thai people, and I have faith that many films still remain in the memories of many even to this day. My profound love and strong bond with Thai films have shaped my entire way of life and continue to be an integral part of my life. Therefore, I wanted to make a film to express my heartfelt gratitude to the Thai film industry”
Once Upon A Star tells the story of the nostalgic charm of the 60s. It revolves around the journey to pursue dreams by a group of dubbers in Unit 18 of the travelling pharma-cinema of the Osotthepayada company, which grabs consumers’ attention with dubbed movie screenings to sell their products. They must confront challenges in an era where the film industry is undergoing transformation. All four team members also have to overcome numerous challenges to reach their dreams.
The lead roles are portrayed by Weir Sukollawat Kanaros as Manit, the team leader and a skilled dubber from Unit 18, Noona Nuengthida Sophon as Ruangkae, a dreamer and a gifted dubber, along with Kao Jirayu La-ongmanee as Kao, a mischievous young representative of the 60s generation, one of the younger members of the team, who dreams of being in front of the camera someday, and Lung Marn, a kind-hearted driver and paternal figure who takes care of everyone in the team, played by Samart Payakaroon.
